Promoting A Better World Through Education, Training & Research
The Malaysian Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology (MABIP) is a registered nonprofit organisation in Malaysia. The MABIP is dedicated to bronchology and interventional pulmonology. Other areas of interest include interventional aspects of sleep medicine, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary physiology, critical care, pulmonary vascular disease and lung transplantation.
It was founded on December 31, 2013 by 6 pulmonologists and 4 pulmonary fellows who wanted to see progress in minimally invasive thoracic procedures in Malaysia. There was no platform for these pioneers who had developed new skills beyond basic diagnostic bronchoscopy since 2007.
As their legacy is important for posterity, a new respiratory society was deemed necessary for Malaysian pulmonologists to develop and promote interventional pulmonology in the country.
The idea for a new society came after the first National interventional bronchoscopy course on September 12 – 13, 2007 at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Encouraged by the overwhelming response, the course had been held annually and well attended by local and overseas pulmonologists. In 2015, this course moved a step further and became known as the Annual Scientific Meeting of the MABIP to encourage research in the field of bronchology and interventional pulmonology. The Scientific Meeting features plenaries, symposia, hands-on workshops, free papers and live cases.
The MABIP was officially launched at Serdang Hospital (a cardio-thoracic centre) on January 18, 2014 by the then Director of Medical Development, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Dato’ Dr Azmi Shapie.
Although the society is still very young, a little over a year later i.e. on March 6, 2015, the MABIP was accepted into the World Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology (WABIP). There are now more than 190 local and overseas members. The MABIP is the sole Malaysian representative on the WABIP.
The fields of bronchoscopy, interventional pulmonology and interventional bronchoscopy are rapidly evolving. We aim to enhance multidisciplinary and international collaboration in our effort to develop and improve techniques and procedures that will benefit our patients with tracheo-br onchial and pleural diseases.
